Course Title: Nursing Therapeutics: Mental Health Care (I)

The appointee will assist in the development of NURS 1403NED: Nursing Therapeutics: Mental Health Care (I) for the School of Nursing and Health Sciences on a freelance basis. The medium of development is English.

Responsibilities

Major Duties and Responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible mainly for the following:

  • Revising the existing syllabus and course contents as directed;
  • Developing updated learning materials;
  • Developing assessment items (including specimen paper, assignment questions, examination paper and their corresponding marking schemes) to enhance students’ learning experience; and
  • Preparing a course guide for the re-developed course.

Candidates

Candidates Should Possess The Following Qualifications, Experience And Competence

  • A higher degree in Nursing;
  • Teaching experience in Nursing or a health-related discipline;
  • A good command of written English; and
  • Preferably with experience in teaching distance learning and / or part-time courses.
  • Previous involvement in developing course materials for higher education institution is a definite advantage.

Background

NURS 1403 NED is a 12-credit unit course spanning over three terms. It is a foundation-level course in the Bachelor of Nursing (part-time) programme, designed basically for Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) students seeking to obtain the Bachelor of Nursing Studies (Mental Health Care). This course aims to provide students with knowledge of the nursing process; the historical development and models of psychiatric nursing; treatments for mental disorders; and nursing management of child and adolescent clients, aged clients, clients with learning disabilities and clients on rehabilitation journeys.

This course comprises the basic concepts of mental health nursing and nursing management of several groups of clients with mental disorders. The contents are systemically organized and discoursed in 15 study units geared towards providing students with a theoretical platform to comprehend how psychiatry, psychology and nursing knowledge applies to these clients.

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Describe the values, steps and implementation of the nursing process;
  • Describe the models, historical development, fundamental concepts and related ordinances of psychiatric nursing;
  • Explain the aetiology, clinical manifestations, assessment and treatment of various disorders of psychogeriatric clients, child and adolescent psychiatric clients, and clients with learning disabilities; and
  • Discuss the nursing care for psychogeriatric, child and adolescent clients with a range of specific mental disorders and clients with learning disabilities.
