Who We Are

Sparkmate is a tribe of fearless makers, solving the world’s most pressing problems with hard tech and industrial solutions. Originally an engineering services company, we have pivoted to focus on developing electric steel production technology. Our goal is to transform the $1.5T global steel industry through the complete electrification of primary ironmaking, eliminating reliance on fossil fuels and driving industrial decarbonization at scale.

We are looking for makers, builders, and innovators who are ready to turn this vision into reality.

About the Job

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer with 1-4 years of experience and a passion for prototyping, materials, and process development to support our research and development efforts in our lab.

If you love both system engineering and mechanical design AND hands-on prototyping we want to hear from you! At Sparkmate, you’ll be part of a dynamic, flat-hierarchy, and fun team where you’ll work on real-world industrial challenges and help develop breakthrough low-temperature electrolysis technology.

This role is very hands-on, requiring strong mechanical design and integration abilities.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, prototype, and test mechanical components and electrochemical cells
  • Develop and optimize CAD models and mechanical simulations (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar)
  • Assemble and troubleshoot experimental test setups, key cell components, and mechanical systems
  • Operate CNC machines, 3D printers, and other prototyping tools to fabricate parts and iterate designs
  • Design and execute experiments to explore a wide range of process conditions, analyzing factor sensitivity and interactions
  • Critically analyze and interpret experimental data, providing insights and recommendations to the team
  • Work with hydraulic systems and fluid control mechanisms in electrolysis setups
  • Apply materials knowledge (metals, plastic polymers) in mechanical designs for durability
  • Identify, refine, and innovate experimental tools and setups to meet evolving project need

What We’re Looking For

  • Proficient in CAD (e.g., SolidWorks) for designing electrolytic cell components.
  • Skilled in systems engineering for integrating mechanical and fluid systems.
  • Experienced in piping design, fluid dynamics, and pressure management.
  • Knowledgeable in selecting materials for high-temperature, corrosive environments.
  • Adept at prototyping
  • Familiar with fabrication techniques for scalable manufacturing.
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field
  • Deep understanding of materials science, particularly metals and plastic polymers, for mechanical and electrochemical applications
  • Hands-on with CNC machining, 3D printing, and rapid prototyping
  • Ability to plan and execute research, take initiative, and drive projects to completion
  • Adaptability to changing processes, experimental setups, and project needs
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced R&D environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for cross-functional collaboration
  • English is Mandatory
  • Cantonese/Mandarin not required but highly appreciated

It's okay if you dont have it all ;)

Why Join Us?
