Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the HPC team members, including recruitment, training and performance evaluation
  • Plan, coordinate and oversee HPC projects to ensure they are completed on time, within budget and to the required quality standards
  • Allocate resources, including hardware, software and personnel, to optimise the performance and efficiency of HPC projects
  • Oversee the design, development and implementation of HPC systems and the HPC data centres, including clusters, supercomputers, cloud-based HPC solutions, connectivity and advanced cooling systems
  • Ensure HPC systems are optimised for performance, reliability and scalability by tuning hardware and software configurations, managing workloads and implementing performance monitoring tools
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for HPC systems and applications, resolving issues related to hardware, software and networking
  • Work closely with stakeholders, including researchers, engineers and students, to understand their computational needs and ensure HPC resources are aligned with their requirements
  • Develop policies and processes for managing HPC infrastructure assets to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
  • Collaborate with hardware and software vendors to acquire, install and maintain HPC resources, ensuring compatibility and support for the latest technologies
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments in HPC technologies, methodologies and industry trends by attending conferences, workshops and training sessions
  • Drive innovation within the HPC team by exploring new technologies, methodologies and approaches to improve the performance, efficiency and capabilities of HPC systems
  • Oversee the budget for HPC resources, ensuring that expenditures are justified and within the allocated budget
  • Develop and enforce policies and procedures related to the use of HPC resources, including security, access control and data management
  • Prepare and present reports on the performance, utilisation, and impact of HPC resources to senior management and other stakeholders
  • May be required to work in shifts and irregular hours
  • Perform any other duties as requested by supervisor(s)

Requirements

  • A recognized Bachelor's Degree or above in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Engineering or related disciplines, preferably with a Master's or Doctoral degree
  • At least 10 years of relevant work experience, including at least 5 years in a management role overseeing a team of professionals
  • In-depth understanding of HPC hardware including supercomputers, clusters, accelerators (GPUs) and storage systems
  • Experience with HPC software such as job schedulers (e.g. Slurm, PBS, Torque and Open OnDemand), parallel file systems (e.g. Lustre and GPFS), HPC storage (e.g. Netapp and Lsilon) and other HPC-specific tools
  • Proficiency in Linux/Unix operating systems and networking technologies relevant to HPC, including InfiniBand and RoCE
  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in HPC such as C, C++, Fortran and Python
  • Experience with parallel programming models and libraries such as CUDA, MPI (Message Passing Interface) and OpenMP (Open Multi-Processing)
  • Skills in performance analysis and optimization of HPC applications
  • Familiarity with profiling and debugging tools specific to HPC environments
  • A good understanding of large-scale data storage solutions and data management best practices in HPC
  • Solid experience in HPC data centre technologies including efficient cooling systems (e.g. liquid cooling and immersion cooling), low latency network, fault tolerance and redundancy design (e.g. redundant power supplies and backup generators) and energy efficiency
  • Extensive experience in managing and operating HPC systems including installation, configuration and maintenance
  • Experience with capacity planning, resource allocation and system monitoring
  • Proven track record in leading HPC-related projects, from planning and execution to delivery and evaluation
  • Experience in managing budgets, timelines, and resources for large-scale HPC projects
  • Experience in leading and managing a diverse team of HPC professionals, including an HPC technical expert and support staff
  • Skills in mentoring, coaching and developing team members
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address technical challenges and optimize HPC performance
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other departments, researchers and students to achieve common goals
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
