TITLE:  EDUCATION OFFICER 

RESPONSIBLE TO : HEAD OF EDUCATION 

RESPONSIBLE FOR : DEVELOPMENT AND DELIVERY OF MUSEUM EDUCATION AND MARITIME EDUCATION PROGRAMMES 

 

ORGANISATIONAL MISSION 

The Museum is an independent, not-for-profit organisation. Its mission is to preserve, showcase and commemorate the maritime culture and experiences of the people of Hong Kong; rooted in China, but looking to the world. We achieve this by promoting engagement with the maritime heritage and contemporary marine environment of Hong Kong and southern China, placing it within its national and international narratives.  We project a sense of social responsibility through collaboration, networking, and community engagement.  As a museum, we preserve the diversity of maritime culture, and peoples’ relationship with the sea through our collecting and stories using a blend of history, art and science. The Museum seeks to provide outstanding and inclusive experiences through academic research, educational programmes, displays, and outreach for public benefit. 

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION 

The Education Team delivers public programming on behalf of the Museum, created for schools, families, universities and community groups. The team seeks new ways to engage people with the Museum’s stories and collections by working with, and sustaining, partnerships to create inclusive programmes that reflect the Museum’s mission. The Museum not only facilitates school visits, works with universities and communities, it also collaborates with Government departments and stakeholders within the shipping industry to promote maritime events, such as Hong Kong Maritime Week, and Family Fun Days where the Museum is open to the public for free for a day. 

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with, and support, the Head of Education to develop and deliver the Museum’s educational programming.
  • Support the Head of Education to attend internal and external meetings by preparing research materials, minutes, project reports, regular reports and other relevant meeting materials. 
  • Maintain current relationships, and create new partnerships, across Hong Kong’s education partners and other collaborators, as well as looking for collaboration opportunities in mainland China.
  • Assist with the recruitment, training, and operational support of the Museum’s internship and volunteer programmes. Ensure that the volunteers can interact confidently and accurately with the public, school groups, professionals, and high-profile visitors.
  • In collaboration with the Head of Education or other team heads, support and assist with potential funding opportunities and partners, who can support the education programmes.
  • Manage the development of relevant and engaging programme materials, from design to output, including liaising with contractors.
  • Work with other HKMM departments to support the creation, promotion, project management and implementation of the education programmes.
  • Manage the school and community group visit bookings, including liaising with the Marine Science team and Venue Hiring team, as required.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with schools and communities for developing potential growth in visitation.
  • Any other comparable duties as required by the Head of Education. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • At least 3-4 Years experience working in the cultural sector, with a relevant university degree or equivalent experience.
  • Must demonstrate a good understanding, and working practice, of Hong Kong’s curriculum and associated programming.
  • Experience of developing and sustaining partnerships.
  • Can work in a fast-paced environment to achieve required goals with proven management and organisational capabilities.
  • Has excellent interpersonal skills who enjoys working in a team, across departments, as well as on their own.
  • Excellent command of English, Cantonese and/or Mandarin, with the ability to effectively communicate across a wide range of individuals and groups, including Government departments.
  • Confident with Microsoft Office/365, and Chinese word processing.

 

Desirable

  • Some experience of writing funding applications would be an advantage.
  • An interest in the Museum’s subjects, stories and collections will be useful. 
  • A working knowledge of multimedia and graphic design.
  • An aptitude to drive digital solutions to create efficiency solutions.
