Tesco Sourcing has been responsible for sourcing Tesco’s non-food products from across the world since 1977. We deliver fashion and home products with great value in mind for our customers. 

Our headquarters are in Hong Kong and we have hubs based in China, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Turkey, but we also have colleagues based in Central Europe, South East Asia and Pakistan. 

Our colleagues in Tesco Sourcing undertake a wide range of different roles, with the majority working in commercial across our non-food product categories. We also have teams responsible for the technical quality of both our products and the factories we partner, as well as a Responsible Sourcing team, who maintain the integrity of our supply chain. Lastly, we have a range of colleagues in support functions, including People, Security & Risk, Finance and Technology.

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Product Developer to join our Seasonal team in Hong Kong. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in product development for similar or related categories and be adept at translating the Buying team’s vision into product ranges that can be sourced locally from our hubs. As a Senior, you will proactively propose new developments tailored for Tesco and support our suppliers in enhancing their design capabilities.

About the Sourcing Commercial team 

Our Sourcing Commercial team is dedicated to building long-term, trusted relationships with our suppliers worldwide. We collaborate closely with our UK buying team and suppliers to source and develop products that offer the best quality and price for our customers. In Hong Kong, our Sourcing Commercial team consists of 27 colleagues who manage sourcing for Home products across South China and Southeast Asia. They specialise in categories such as seasonal, gardening & camping, electrical & home utilities, and cook & dine. Additionally, our Supply Planning team ensures timely delivery of our products. The broader Hong Kong hub includes colleagues from Technical and Responsible Sourcing, with whom we partner daily, as well as the majority of our Finance, People and Technology teams.

About the role

This role will report to our Senior Sourcing Manager, based in Hong Kong.  

This role will lead product development activities for all trends and briefs within the Seasonal category. The successful candidate will understand design trends and themes from our Design team, interpreting the Buyer’s and Designer’s vision into products that customer’s love. The successful candidate will possess a deep understanding of current trends and the technical aspects of product development. Excellent communication skills are essential to effectively share these trends with our internal team and enhance supplier design capabilities. This role is fast-paced and offers the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse range of global stakeholders to design trend-driven products that are high-quality and cost-effective. 

The role is based in our Hong Kong hub in Kwun Tong. We have flexible working arrangements but like to spend as much time collaborating together in the office as we do working independently offsite. We prioritise making our business a great place to work, and all colleagues are encouraged to help organise and participate in different activities outside their day job.

You will be responsible for

• Leading product development activities based on design trends and briefs from the design team
• Translating buyers' and designers' visions into products customers’ love and delivering great ranges
• Driving trend implementation in the Seasonal and Home teams, ensuring developments are cost-effective and manufacturing feasible
• Identifying design gaps and proactively proposing new developments
• Communicating trend boards and briefs to suppliers and internal teams
• Gathering market intelligence, competitor insights, and supplier trends, and feeding this information to the design and sourcing teams with design/development proposals
• Collaborating with Sourcing Managers on our supplier strategy, building trusted and long-term relationships with suppliers and factories
• Ensuring suppliers' artwork aligns with the buying team's design direction
• Managing key dates within the critical path for the product development area
• Maintaining a strong understanding of finishes, colours and market fit
• Supporting category alignment and upskilling teams on product trends
• Coordinating high-level design trends and seasonal graphics for Home & Seasonal categories
• Developing suppliers' product development and design capabilities, supporting and empowering them to translate trend directions and product briefs into new product designs
• Pre-briefing suppliers on design themes and conveying customer expectations of quality and cost

You will need

• Experience in design, trend analysis, and product development
• Retail or sourcing experience, particularly in Seasonal and Home categories
• Proficient in communicating creative, trend and design concepts
• Skilled in Adobe software, including Illustrator and Photoshop
• Strong hand-sketching, graphic sense, and visualisation abilities
• Keen eye for trends, materials, textures, colours and drawings suited to the Western market
• Meticulous attention to detail
• Knowledge and experience in production and factory processes
