Hong Kong Baptist University is a leading research liberal arts university in Asia. Founded in 1968, the School of Communication has three departments of 1) Journalism; 2) Communication Studies; and 3) Interactive Media. Together they offer seven programmes at the undergraduate and postgraduate (MA, MPhil, PhD) levels to 2,000 students. As a leading school in the Asia-Pacific region, its faculty members work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary academic environment that entails collaboration across multiple fields of study. The newly established AI Media Center, in particular, is at the forefront of pioneering research in media and communication, bringing together scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds (communication studies, journalism, computer science, interaction design, gaming, animation, etc.) to leverage AI technologies and develop cutting-edge research projects and applications to tackle current and future challenges.

The Department of Interactive Media (IMD) aims to nurture students to be the next generation of communication professionals poised to harness the latest digital media technologies to effectively deliver intended messages to target audiences with interactive and engaging contents on diverse media platforms. 

Drawing upon over twenty years of consolidated experience of delivering courses related to game design and interactive application, computer animation, and visual communication, the department’s Game Design and Animation programme is the first-of-its-kind in Hong Kong tertiary education, that equips students with the skills and critical capacity to become creative professionals, entrepreneurs and innovators for an increasingly interactive, connected and immersive media. 

Senior Lecturer / Lecturer in Game Design (24250068)

The Department invites applications for full-time faculty position of Senior Lecturer / Lecturer in Game Design. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment in teaching, curriculum design and administrative tasks; a master's or PhD degree in engineering, communication, media art, or related fields; and a profile that matches one or more of the following: 

  • Demonstrated experience in teaching game design related courses at undergraduate or postgraduate levels;
  • Extensive experience in game development, with leading role(s) in game design, technical direction, software engineering, and visual development, etc.;
  • Independent game development, media art and animation production with recognitions and awards from international animation and media art festivals such as Ars Electronica FILE, and BAFTA; and conferences such as GDC, SIGGRAPH and The Game Awards, etc.;
  • Entrepreneurial experience in game development and the entertainment industry, with established networks of connection with industry professionals;
  • Track record of industry-led research in the fields of computer graphics, artificial intelligence, algorithms, interaction/game design, mixed-reality, immersive media and interactive narrative, etc.; and
  • Track record of innovative pedagogical achievements in the integration of science, technology and art, within the context of game design and animation. 

Responsibilities:

  • Involve in the design and development of courses and curriculum;
  • Deliver quality teaching and supervision in relevant discipline(s) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Teach practical game design related courses such as 2D/3D game programming, AI for games, and physics simulations, etc.;
  • Enhance industry-academia collaboration;
  • Engage in professional, institutional and community services; and
  • Collaborate with faculty across disciplines to promote interdisciplinary initiatives and research opportunities that explore the intersection of communication, media psychology, interactive media, game design, animation, and AI technologies. 

The initial appointment will be offered on a fixed-term contract of up to three years commencing September 2025 or on a mutually agreed date. Re-appointments thereafter will be subject to performance and mutual agreement.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. 

Candidates with less experience will be considered for the position at a lower rank.
