You will be a senior member of the technology and product development team within the Acute Care Monitoring ( ACM ) business of Medtronic , focusing on advanced manufacturing engineering. Specifically, you will join a high-growth R&D team dedicated to creating category-redefining products that address unmet customer needs. Our team originated from Medtronic’s acquisition of Aircraft Medical, which designed the McGrath Mac Video Laryngoscope. The team follows a human-centered design process to deliver thoughtful and inspiring products.

Within a large organization like Medtronic, the team maintains a startup mentality. You will work in a cooperative workspace with key cross-functional partners, including designers, design researchers, clinical scientists, marketers, engineers from multiple disciplines, and manufacturing experts, all with a "can do, will do" spirit.

We are eager to add senior members who bring fresh ideas and advanced skill sets, particularly those with a passion for innovation and disruption in advanced manufacturing engineering for medical devices.

A Day in the Life:

As the Manager of Product Development, you will lead and oversee all aspects of the design and development lifecycle for new medical device products or software systems. This role is pivotal in driving innovation, fostering collaboration, and ensuring successful execution of product development initiatives. You will take ownership of technical planning, resource allocation, and stakeholder alignment, while mentoring and developing a high-performing team in a matrixed and cross-cultural organization.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

  • Plan, direct, and implement all aspects of the Group 's product development lifecycle for new medical device products and systems.

  • Lead or participate in the planning and coordination of large- and medium-scale projects, ensuring strategic alignment with company goals.

  • Drive technical planning, including scheduling, budgeting, resource allocation, and risk management to meet project objectives .

Team Building and Development

  • Establish close collaboration and coordination with other managers in the expansive McGRATH R&D team to ensure cohesive talent retention and people development, facilitate seamless project transitions between groups and phases, and most importantly, maintain a creative spirit and enjoyable working environment.

  • Build and mentor a team of engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • Define performance goals and targets, conduct performance reviews, and hold regular 1:1s to guide employee development and manage toward departmental goals.

  • Provide leadership to staff, ensuring the prioritization of strategic and departmental-level initiatives.

Product Development Oversight

  • Take responsibility for new product development, ensuring technical planning, design outcomes, and deliverables are achieved for multiple projects.

  • Collaborate with operations, regulatory, marketing, and clinical teams to align group skills and capabilities with NPD strategies and process technology needs.

  • Oversee transfer of designs from development to production, ensuring scalability and manufacturability.

Stakeholder and Customer Engagement

  • Interface directly with customers to understand user needs and requirements, translating them into actionable product designs.

  • Organize and coordinate activities with external partners, consultants, and internal stakeholders to ensure timely delivery of projects.

Operational Excellence

  • Lead project execution, including project planning, budgeting, scheduling, risk management, issue resolution, and release strategy.

  • Maintain accountability for overall project success in a highly regulated environment, ensuring compliance with medical device regulations.

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of systems engineering principles and requirements management.

Matrixed Leadership

  • Influence and lead effectively in a matrixed, cross-cultural organization.

  • Foster strategic partnerships across functions and with external collaborators to achieve organizational objectives .

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent.

  • 10+ years of engineering experience in medical devices or a related field, with 3+ years of leadership experience.

  • Proven expertise in new product development and delivering outcomes from concept to commercialization.

  • Proficiency in project management, design controls, risk management, and medical device regulations.

  • Strong collaboration, communication, and cross-functional partnership skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or equivalent.

  • Experience developing single-use medical devices and transferring designs to production.

  • Expertise in airway management , endoscopic devices, or similar technologies.

  • Cross-functional experience with operations, test engineering, process development, and external manufacturing partners.

  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems for clinical users, engage with physicians, and manage product complaints.
