We are seeking an experienced operations manager to join Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IHSS) as its Head of Operations (at the rank of Assistant Registrar or Administrative Assistant I, depending on qualifications and experience). Reporting to the Director of IHSS, this is a senior role at a distinguished research institution at one of Asia’s premier universities.

The Role

The appointee will be responsible for overseeing all operational aspects of IHSS, including leading its administrative staff (covering HR, IT, finance, facilities and organisational development), managing partnerships, engagements and fundraising efforts, administering research projects and educational programs, coordinating committee meetings and institute activities (both internal and external outreach), and communicating with stakeholders. Key responsibilities:

  • To assist academic staff and collaborate with local and international academics, funding bodies, government departments, and business professionals; 
  • To provide strong leadership and ensure the smooth operations of all initiatives and programs, making the Institute a productive and efficient research place;
  • To provide strategic counsel to the Director and stakeholders and align current and future programs with the Institute's goals; and
  • To oversee the development and execution of the rebranding and website initiatives, ensuring high-quality delivery and communications.

Qualifications and Qualities

  • A recognised university degree or equivalent qualifications in operations management, business management, communications, public affairs, humanities, social sciences, or a related discipline, with 10+ years of relevant experience in operations management;
  • A proven track record of managing teams and multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment;
  • A collaborative leadership style with a broad knowledge of both the local and international landscapes; experience in higher education or the business sector is a definite plus;
  • Excellent problem-solving and strategic thinking skills, with good judgment and ability to communicate effectively with others; and
  • A good sense of branding and marketing, with high proficiency in written and spoken English and Chinese (both Cantonese and Putonghua).

What We Offer

The appointment will be in the form of a fixed-term full-time contract for 2 years, to commence as soon as possible and with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary.
